Two drug traffickers involved in a cocaine plot aiming to flood Scotland with drugs have been sentenced to a total of seven years and six months in prison. Craig Garland, 37, and Brandon Guthrie, 31, were part of a Dundee gang responsible for sourcing and distributing Class A drugs worth thousands of pounds. The illegal activities of the gang were exposed after the police successfully infiltrated the encrypted EncroChat phone network as part of Operation Ranger, linking Garland and Guthrie to drug deals.
During a raid on Garland’s residence, police discovered cocaine valued at £23,000 and a 20-tonne hydraulic press commonly used by drug trafficking groups to recompress controlled substances. Both men appeared before the High Court in Glasgow, where they pleaded guilty to charges related to Serious Organised Crime and cocaine supply. They each received a sentence of three years and nine months in prison.
The court heard that Garland and Guthrie were part of a gang led by an individual who passed away in 2021. Guthrie’s role involved coordinating drug deliveries, collecting payments, and accumulating cash, while Garland was responsible for storing, preparing, and adulterating the drugs. The pair used the Encrochat messaging system to facilitate drug deals between March and June 2020. Police found incriminating evidence, including over 2000 lines of conversation and 26 images directly linking Garland and Guthrie to drug trafficking activities.
Following simultaneous police raids on their homes in October 2020, both men were arrested. A substantial quantity of cocaine with a street value of £23,000 was seized from Garland’s residence, along with the hydraulic press. Garland may face confiscation action under Proceeds of Crime legislation to recover illegally obtained funds.
