A masked thug who fired fireworks at police officers during a night of “mass disorder” is set to face a jail sentence. Dean Gorrie, a 19-year-old scaffolder, was part of a large group wearing balaclavas that attacked police officers in Edinburgh on Bonfire Night in 2023. The shocking incident took place in the capital’s Niddrie area, where Gorrie was seen launching explosives at both police and members of the public.
During a hearing at Edinburgh Sheriff Court, Fiscal depute Cheryl Porter revealed that Gorrie was captured on CCTV footage igniting fireworks and throwing them at police lines. The court heard that Gorrie also targeted passing members of the public with fireworks, causing chaos and endangering lives. Gorrie was identified through extensive police investigations following the violent events of that night.
Gorrie pleaded guilty to culpably and recklessly discharging fireworks at both members of the public and police officers, putting them at risk of injury. His actions were deemed extremely dangerous, prompting Sheriff Julius Komorowski to acknowledge that Gorrie could be facing a substantial sentence, including the possibility of custody. The court deferred the sentencing to allow for social work reports and assessments to be prepared.
