Residents in West Dunbartonshire are set to face additional delays in their bin collections, with the council attributing the issue to a combination of limited resources and icy weather conditions. West Dunbartonshire Council has reported that there may be disruptions in the pickup of brown food waste bins due to these constraints.
This announcement comes following previous criticisms aimed at the council for the cancellation of festive bin collections, a decision made amidst what was described as “workforce resource challenges.” The council struggled to secure waste collection workers for overtime shifts during the holiday season.
In an update provided on Wednesday, the council acknowledged the difficulties in adhering to the scheduled brown bin collections. A spokesperson stated that resource constraints, coupled with the impact of icy conditions, could result in delays. Residents have been advised to leave their brown bins kerbside for collection, ensuring that they will be collected as soon as possible.
Efforts are underway to mitigate the situation, particularly for residents whose general waste and recycling collections were affected during the festive period. The council has also indicated that additional waste placed in black bin bags alongside general waste bins may be picked up separately.
Despite the inconveniences faced by residents, the council expressed appreciation for their patience during this challenging period. The festive bin collection disruptions previously faced backlash from the GMB union, representing waste collection workers, who had warned the council about potential overtime refusals amid pay disputes.
Looking ahead, the council aims to address the current challenges and resume normal waste collection operations as swiftly as possible, seeking to alleviate any further inconvenience caused by the delays.
Overall, the council’s efforts to communicate openly about the issues faced and provide updates to residents showcase transparency and a proactive approach in resolving the situation. By acknowledging the resource limitations and weather impacts, the council aims to demonstrate accountability and responsiveness in managing waste collection services for the community.
