Plans for the new Falkirk town hall are progressing, five years after the initial agreement was made. Falkirk Council has unveiled images of the proposed building, which is estimated to cost nearly £70 million to construct. The town hall is anticipated to host over 300,000 visitors annually and contribute £3.38 million to the local economy each year.
Situated on the former Callendar Square shopping centre site, the new town hall will feature a 550-seat theatre for various performances, including touring theatre shows, musical acts, and local productions. Additionally, there will be an auditorium for council meetings and community events, a library, cafe, advice hub, and some office spaces. The aim is to create a vibrant and safe space that will be active both day and night, offering entertainment, dining options, and community activities.
The decision to replace the current town hall was made in 2019, with a location agreed upon three years later. The anticipated cost has soared due to rising construction expenses, leading to a funding deficit of approximately £16 million. To bridge this gap, the council is considering using service concessions to make up for the shortfall.
The new town hall is envisioned to be a focal point of the town centre masterplan, aiming to attract locals, tourists, and visitors from neighbouring areas. Malcolm Bennie, Director of Place Services at Falkirk Council, emphasised the transformative impact the venue would have on the town, predicting increased footfall and economic growth. The project aligns with the £148 million Falkirk and Grangemouth Growth Deal, highlighting its significance for the broader Falkirk region.
The town hall will offer a space for creative productions, community gatherings, and educational activities, catering to a diverse range of interests. While acknowledging the ongoing operational costs, efforts are being made to enhance revenue streams and minimise expenses.
Public consultation on the proposed venue is set to take place, allowing residents and businesses to provide feedback and shape the final design. The council executive meeting on January 23 will address this consultation process, underscoring the commitment to community engagement and transparency in the development of the new Falkirk town hall.
