Dumfries and Galloway Eco Warriors Set to Celebrate Seventh Anniversary with Beach Clean-Up
The Dumfries and Galloway Eco Warriors are gearing up to mark their seventh anniversary by organising a beach clean-up event at Southerness on Sunday. The group, founded by Laura Howieson, is inviting volunteers and the community to join in the effort to clean up the beach while enjoying some soup and cake as a token of appreciation.
Laura Howieson, one of the founders of the group, expressed their annual tradition of returning to Southerness, where it all began. She highlighted the importance of not only cleaning up but also educating future generations about sustainability, recycling, and individual actions that can bring about a positive change in the environment. The group aims to foster a sense of community and promote a positive mindset through their initiatives.
The Eco Warriors group, started by Laura and her friends Fiona and Lottie seven years ago, initially came together over their concerns about the increasing rubbish levels, particularly along the coast. What began as a single beach clean-up event in January 2018 has now evolved into regular clean-up activities, including themed events like fancy dress cleans at Halloween and educational programs like the shark egg hunt in collaboration with The Shark Trust.
Aside from beach clean-ups, the group also extends its efforts to cleaning laybys, business premises, parks, and even remote areas with the help of support from local businesses, organisations like Solway Firth Partnership, Keep Scotland Beautiful, Dumfries and Galloway Council, and Rotary clubs. The group’s inclusive approach welcomes well-behaved children and dogs to participate in their activities, emphasizing collaboration and volunteerism over blame.
The upcoming seventh birthday beach clean-up at Southerness on January 19 promises to be a meaningful event for both the group and the community, with volunteers encouraged to contact the group beforehand to ensure ample supplies for all participants.
In conclusion, the Dumfries and Galloway Eco Warriors exemplify the power of grassroots environmental activism and community engagement in tackling local environmental challenges. Their dedication to cleaning up and educating others signals a positive step towards building a more sustainable and environmentally conscious society.
