A Scottish businessman is facing a potential life sentence after being found guilty of the murder of his wife, who was 29 years younger than him, at their marital home. Walter Buchanan, aged 66, was convicted of attacking his wife Darrel Buchanan, 37, at their luxury flat near Hamilton racecourse in Lanarkshire on February 18, 2023. The court heard that Buchanan choked Darrel after she accused him of infidelity, referring to him as a “wife cheater”. Despite his denials, Buchanan was found guilty following a trial at the High Court in Glasgow.
The couple met in 2015 while Buchanan was on holiday in Thailand and tied the knot two years later. Buchanan, a father of two, and Darrel, who had a young son, seemed happy on the surface. However, tensions arose, with Darrel allegedly expressing her unhappiness and doubts about Buchanan’s fidelity. On the night of the incident, Buchanan received a text from Darrel accusing him of enjoying himself in Bothwell without her, further fuelling the argument about his alleged infidelity.
During the trial, Buchanan claimed that Darrel attacked him first, prompting him to defend himself. He admitted to causing the marks on her neck and acknowledged his actions, including pushing her face and holding her by the neck. Buchanan called emergency services the next morning after waking up to find Darrel unresponsive. Despite their efforts, Darrel could not be saved, having suffered significant injuries including compression to the neck, a brain injury, bruising, and a rib fracture.
