University of Stirling Launches Air Quality Tool for Locals
Researchers at the University of Stirling have unveiled a new online tool that allows residents to report and monitor air quality levels in the Stirling and Clackmannanshire areas. The tool, an interactive map, enables participants to identify their location and document the perceived sources impacting the air quality around them. Individuals can share their experiences anonymously, contributing to a database that will be analysed by the university’s research teams to determine the placement of air quality sensors.
Dr Heather Price, a Senior Lecturer in Environmental Geography at the University of Stirling, emphasised the significance of this platform in engaging the community to share their insights and observations on local air quality. The tool, part of the Forth Environmental Resilience Array (Forth-ERA) project, aims to gather crucial environmental data for scientific research, environmental management, and business innovation to support Scotland’s shift towards a net-zero carbon society.
Dr Amy McCarron, the Forth-ERA Scientific Outreach and Impact Officer, highlighted the importance of individual contributions in shaping research and decision-making processes. Personal experiences shared through the platform will aid in strategically situating air quality sensors to collect pertinent data benefitting the community at large.
The initiative, spearheaded by Scotland’s International Environment Centre (SIEC) at the University of Stirling and supported by UK and Scottish Governments funding under the Stirling and Clackmannanshire City Region Deal, signifies a pioneering effort in environmental data collection and research.
