Former England rugby stars are set to participate in a unique hybrid match at Headingley in order to raise funds for research and support for those living with Motor Neurone Disease (MND). The special event, named the ‘745 Game’ after the shirt numbers of the late Rob Burrow, Ed Slater, and Scotland’s Doddie Weir, is scheduled for November 17.
The concept for the cross-code match was conceived by Rob Burrow and former Gloucester player Ed Slater, who himself was diagnosed with MND in 2022. The tragic passing of Burrow at the age of 41 in June further underscored the importance of raising awareness and funds for MND research.
Former players from both rugby union and rugby league backgrounds will be participating in the match, including ex-England internationals Danny Cipriani, Billy Twelvetrees, Tom Youngs, Keith Senior, Adrian Morley, and Danny McGuire among others. The game is expected to be played under a unique set of cross-code rules specifically tailored for this occasion.
Ed Slater expressed his excitement for the upcoming match, highlighting the enthusiasm and support from former players who are eager to take to the field in solidarity with the MND community. The event holds special significance as it was a vision shared by Burrow and Slater nearly a year ago, with Burrow being particularly passionate about bringing it to fruition.
The match will feature a 13-a-side format with distinctive rules such as unlimited tackles in one’s own half and reduced tackles after crossing the halfway line, uncontested scrums and line-outs, and varied points awarded for scoring opportunities. This innovative approach aims to create a competitive yet enjoyable experience for players and fans alike.
Rob Burrow, known for his successful career with Leeds Rhinos where he contributed to eight Super League titles, dedicated his efforts post-diagnosis to raising funds for MND research, including the construction of a new care centre for MND patients in collaboration with his former teammate Kevin Sinfield. The upcoming fixture at Headingley signifies a new chapter in the history of cross-code matches, bringing together stars from both rugby disciplines in support of a worthy cause.
