Storm Eowyn’s havoc continues as thousands still without power in Scotland
Thousands of properties across Scotland are still grappling with power outages and ongoing disruptions to rail services as the aftermath of Storm Eowyn persists. The storm, which lashed the country with high winds and gusts of up to 100mph, left tens of thousands of homes without power. Despite recovery efforts, around 2,800 properties were still disconnected four days after the storm struck.
The widespread damage caused by Storm Eowyn includes infrastructure damage on the rail network and falling trees that have obstructed tracks. Network Rail has been diligently working on repairs, managing to reopen the majority of the network. However, specific routes such as Paisley-Gourock/Wemyss Bay and Kilwinning-Largs/Ardrossan remain closed, along with the Hamilton Circle and Ayr-Girvan-Stranraer routes.
Scotland’s First Minister, John Swinney, acknowledged the monumental task of restoring power across the country in the aftermath of the storm. As of Tuesday morning, significant numbers of households, including 900 SSEN Distribution customers and 1,908 SP Energy Networks customers, were still without electricity. Both energy companies have deployed their engineers to expedite reconnections.
Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes assured that there would be relentless efforts to restore power to affected properties swiftly. She emphasised the unprecedented challenge faced and expressed empathy for those enduring power cuts. Despite the challenging circumstances, Forbes affirmed the unwavering commitment from the government and energy providers to expedite the restoration process.
In addition to power disruptions, Storm Eowyn also claimed a life, with Calum Carmichael tragically losing his life in a car incident involving a falling tree in Mauchline. The storm prompted the closure of hundreds of schools and necessitated red weather warnings across various regions. Authorities continue to urge vigilance and caution, with ScotRail advising travellers to check for updates on service availability.
