Ambulance staff in Dumfries and Galloway have been subjected to more than 30 attacks over the past five years. The incidents ranged from being spat at, kicked, to verbal assaults while on duty. These distressing statistics are part of a larger issue, with over 1,500 attacks on ambulance staff recorded across the country since 2020.
A spokesperson for the Scottish Ambulance Service strongly condemned these attacks, highlighting that such behaviour is completely unacceptable. Ambulance staff, who work tirelessly to help patients and save lives, should be able to carry out their duties without fear of assault or abuse. The abuse extends to call handlers as well, who face verbal assaults on a daily basis.
Legal firm Legal Expert obtained these alarming figures through freedom of information requests. Between 2020 and 2024, 1,527 staff members faced abuse while carrying out their essential work. In Dumfries and Galloway alone, there were 37 reported incidents, with some specific details withheld for confidentiality reasons.
Incidents in 2024 included eight attacks, some classified as “common law intent,” such as staff members being spat on, punched, or kicked. Cases of “menace” were also logged, involving threats with weapons within close proximity to the staff. Patrick Mallon, a solicitor from Legal Expert, expressed deep concern over these figures, emphasising the need to address and prevent such abuse towards NHS staff.
The Scottish Ambulance Service has reiterated its commitment to collaborating with Police Scotland to take action against those responsible for assaulting or abusing their dedicated staff members. It is essential to ensure the safety and well-being of these frontline workers who play a crucial role in the healthcare system.
