Scottish retail businesses are facing a concerning trend with a £170 million surge in shoplifting incidents, putting their operations at risk. Recent data reveals that Scottish retailers have suffered a significant financial blow due to the increasing number of organised thefts and occupational shoplifting incidents. The cost of these crimes has nearly doubled from £90 million in 2022, posing a severe threat to the sustainability of businesses across Scotland.
The rise in theft has also been accompanied by a disturbing increase in violent attacks, with an average of 170 incidents of violence or abuse towards Scottish shop workers occurring daily last year, amounting to nearly 4000 violent assaults in total. Business owners argue that the £3 million funding boost allocated by the Scottish Government to combat retail crime is insufficient. Many believe that a more visible police presence is essential to deter potential thieves and ensure the safety of both staff and customers.
Ewan MacDonald-Russell, Deputy Head of the Scottish Retail Consortium, expressed grave concern over the situation, stating that retail crime in Scotland is spiralling out of control. He highlighted the impact of such crimes on consumers, leading to higher prices and inconvenience as retailers strive to offset the losses incurred from criminal activities. MacDonald-Russell emphasised the urgent need for a more comprehensive effort across the criminal justice system to address the escalating issue and safeguard retail workers and customers.
The British Retail Consortium’s Annual Crime Survey further underscored the severity of the situation, revealing a 50% increase in retail violence and abuse incidents, reaching over 2,000 incidents daily. With theft incidents reaching an all-time high and organised crime groups targeting stores nationwide, the retail industry is grappling with significant challenges that require immediate attention and effective solutions.
In response to the escalating crisis, calls have been made for greater resources and a more robust approach to tackling retail crime in Scotland. The Scottish Government has allocated £3 million to address the issue in the upcoming year, in addition to a record investment in policing. However, stakeholders stress the need for sustained efforts and collaboration to combat retail crime effectively and protect businesses and individuals from further harm.
