Dutch airline KLM plans ‘painful’ cost-cutting to combat high costs and staff shortages

Dutch airline KLM has recently announced plans for a significant round of cost-cutting measures in an effort to address high operational costs and tackle staff shortages. The airline is striving to enhance its financial position as it continues to navigate the aftermath of the global COVID-19 pandemic, which brought air travel to a standstill across the world.

KLM’s CEO, Marjan Rintel, highlighted the challenges faced by the airline industry, stating that KLM, like many other airlines, is grappling with high costs and disruptions in staffing and equipment availability. Despite operating at full capacity, KLM has yet to reach pre-pandemic levels due to ongoing constraints.

As a member of the Air France-KLM group, KLM suffered a significant loss of 7.1 billion euros ($8.4 billion) in 2020 amidst the pandemic-related travel restrictions, resulting in a drastic 67% decline in passenger numbers. In response, KLM has laid out a comprehensive set of measures aimed at improving its operating results by 450 million euros ($497 million) in the near term.

While specific details regarding potential staff reductions were not disclosed, KLM emphasised its commitment to safeguarding jobs across the organisation to the greatest extent possible. CEO Marjan Rintel acknowledged the challenging nature of the cost-cutting measures, describing them as necessary steps that must be taken at this juncture.

Chief Financial Officer Bas Brouns underlined that the cost-cutting initiatives would create room for investments in modernising KLM’s fleet with quieter and more fuel-efficient aircraft. The planned measures include enhancing productivity, addressing pilot shortages, rebalancing European and long-haul flight operations, and exploring options for outsourcing certain maintenance activities.

Additionally, KLM is re-evaluating or delaying planned investments and considering outsourcing, divesting, or discontinuing activities that do not directly contribute to flight operations. By implementing these measures, KLM aims to strengthen its financial resilience and lay the groundwork for sustainable growth in the future.
