Killer ‘Red Rum’ and Accomplice Sentenced to Life Imprisonment for Gruesome Murder
A convicted murderer and his accomplice have been handed life sentences for the brutal murder and dismemberment of Sarah Mayhew. Steve Sansom, 45, who was released on licence at the time of the killing, and Gemma Watts, 49, pleaded guilty to murdering Mayhew between March 7 and April 3. They also admitted to perverting the course of justice by cutting up Ms Mayhew’s body, scattering her remains across various locations, and cleaning up after themselves. Sansom, known to use the alias ‘Red Rum’ on Facebook, posted a chilling message a month before the discovery of Mayhew’s body, hinting at the heinous crime. The judge remarked on the tragedy of Mayhew’s life during sentencing, stating that her greatest misfortune was knowing the two perpetrators. Sansom will spend the rest of his life in prison without the possibility of release, while Watts is facing a minimum of 29 years and 90 days behind bars.
Sansom and Watts were familiar with Mayhew, who lived in New Addington on the fringes of Croydon. Watts, residing on Featherbed Lane in New Addington, admitted to murder and perverting the course of justice but denied three counts of creating indecent images of a child, which will remain on file at the court. CCTV footage presented during the sentencing hearing depicted Sansom and Watts attempting to conceal a body and disposing of Mayhew’s limbs at Rowdown Fields in New Addington. Mayhew’s torso was later discovered in the River Wandle in Mitcham. It was revealed that Sansom had previously served time for the murder and robbery of a minicab driver in 1999 and was released on licence in 2019 before committing the second murder.
The authorities were alerted to Mayhew’s remains after a dog walker stumbled upon a human bone belonging to her. DNA tests confirmed that the body parts found belonged to Mayhew, leading to the arrest and sentencing of Sansom and Watts.
