Uddingston bank branch to shut its doors

Uddingston Bank Branch to Close in May

Uddingston is set to bid farewell to its Bank of Scotland branch as Lloyds Banking Group, the parent company, has announced the closure of 136 high-street branches across the country in the next 14 months. The Main Street branch, located in Uddingston, will shut its doors on May 22 due to a decrease in footfall, with officials revealing that the number of transactions at the branch has halved in the past five years.

Customers are being urged to embrace digital banking channels such as the mobile app, internet banking, and telephone banking. Additionally, they are encouraged to use the alternative Bellshill branch, located three miles away, the banking services at Uddingston’s post office on Church Street, and the nearest free ATM at Morrisons Daily across the street.

The closure decision was based on a review document published on the bank’s website, indicating a 51% decrease in counter and immediate deposit machine transactions from July 2019 to July 2024. Business customer use plummeted by 59%, while ATM usage dropped by 28%. The analysis further revealed that out of 672 customers who transacted at the branch over six months, 84% also utilized phone, internet, or other branch banking services during the same period.

Bank officials, after considering changing trends and branch usage, asserted that most customers are now favouring digital banking options, leading to reduced footfall in physical branches like Uddingston. They assured that the closure would not lead to job losses, as all affected employees would be offered roles at other branches or within the business.

Following the closure of branches in Lanark, Lesmahagow, and Strathaven in 2024, the shutdown of the Uddingston branch adds to the list of closures. This move will leave Bank of Scotland with four branches in South Lanarkshire and six in North Lanarkshire. The bank stated that customers can still access banking services through various other channels such as phone banking, community bankers, or at Halifax, Lloyds, or Bank of Scotland branches.

Community stakeholders, including Citizens’ Advice, Post Office groups, and local parliamentarians, have been consulted for feedback regarding the closure. Despite the closure, Bank of Scotland remains committed to providing accessible and flexible banking options for its customers.

In Summary:
The impending closure of the Uddingston Bank of Scotland branch reflects a broader trend towards digital banking and reduced footfall in physical bank branches. As customers shift towards online banking channels, the banking landscape continues to evolve, prompting banks to adapt their services to meet changing consumer preferences. The closure of the Uddingston branch aligns with a strategic decision to streamline operations while ensuring that customers have access to alternative banking options within the vicinity.
