Terminally ill teenager left in hospital corridor for 14 hours emerges from coma
A harrowing incident unfolded as an 18-year-old terminally ill teenager, Mark McAvoy from Partick, Glasgow, was left unattended in a hospital corridor for 14 hours before finally being rushed for emergency surgery. Mark, who suffers from Cerebral Palsy and Scoliosis, was initially brought to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow on January 6 due to severe stomach pain and vomiting. Despite his urgent condition, he was informed there were no beds available and was left on a trolley in the hallway as he endured excruciating pain.
As Mark’s health deteriorated, he was diagnosed with a stomach ulcer the following day. Subsequently, he underwent an intensive eight-hour operation before being transferred to the intensive care unit and placed in an induced coma. After weeks of being in a medically induced coma, Mark underwent a tracheotomy on January 24, a procedure that involved inserting a breathing tube into his windpipe. This procedure was a last-ditch effort by the medical team to bring him out of the coma.
Miraculously, on January 25, Mark regained consciousness, much to the relief of his family. Since waking up, he has shown signs of improvement, such as being able to sit in a chair and breathe independently for longer periods each day. Mark’s mother, Leanne Reston, expressed her dismay at the hospital’s initial lack of attention to her son’s critical condition, claiming that timely intervention could have prevented him from slipping into a coma.
In response to the incident, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde issued an apology to Mark’s family, citing the overwhelming pressures faced by healthcare services, especially during winter. While confidentiality prevents them from discussing individual cases, they acknowledged the distress caused by any delays in treatment.
