Rising football star turned disability advocate, Ross Edwards, is teaming up with legendary players to drive a new campaign for disability support. Ross, a promising midfield talent signed by Dundee United under the management of Jim McLean, saw his football career abruptly cut short at the age of 21 when a tragic car crash left him wheelchair-bound.
Ross, who had been playing for his local team PPD Amateurs in Dundee, suffered permanent brain damage and impaired speech following the accident in December 1980. Despite the challenges he faced, Ross, now 65, is lending his voice to The Power of Five campaign for Capability Scotland, alongside football greats Gordon Smith and Billy Davies.
The campaign aims to raise £100,000 towards a new community centre in Perth, where Ross currently resides at Capability Scotland’s Upper Springland facility. Despite being an avid Dundee fan, Ross now holds a season ticket for St Johnstone FC, showcasing his unwavering passion for football.
Gordon Smith, who played for various clubs including Kilmarnock and Rangers, highlighted the importance of supporting individuals like Ross, emphasizing the unpredictability of life. Billy Davies, known for his playing and managerial career, echoed the sentiment, urging the community to come together and make a lasting impact through the campaign.
The initiative has garnered support from clubs like St. Mirren, Dundee, and Dundee United, among others, with plans underway to establish the Our Inclusive Community Project facility in Perth. The facility, with an estimated cost of £8 million, aims to accommodate Ross and 60 other residents and service users with comprehensive care and support.
