Ohio girl concedes cutting off tanker that spilled chemical last year in Illinois, killing 5

Ohio Girl Admits to Accidentally Forcing Tanker Off Road, Causing Chemical Spill and 5 Deaths

A startling revelation has emerged regarding the tragic tanker-truck crash in central Illinois a year ago, which resulted in the death of five individuals after a toxic chemical spill. A federal report on the incident included an interview with a 17-year-old girl from Ohio who admitted that the truck was forced off the road due to her actions. The girl confessed during an interview with Illinois State Police that the tanker had slowed down and veered to the right to avoid a head-on collision with her minivan on U.S. 40 in Teutopolis on September 29, 2023.

The National Transportation Safety Board released dash-cam footage from the tanker, showing the sequence of events leading to the tragic crash. The girl, upon viewing the footage, expressed shock and remorse, acknowledging her mistake. The tanker, carrying caustic anhydrous ammonia, jack-knifed and collided with a utility trailer, causing a spill of approximately half of its 7,500-gallon load.

Five individuals lost their lives, including three family members who were in the vicinity of the accident. Following the spill, around 500 people were evacuated to avoid exposure to the hazardous chemical fumes. While the transportation board has provided factual details of the incident, further analysis and conclusions are pending.

The girl, whose identity remains confidential as she was a minor at the time, recounted that she was on a trip with her family to visit her mother’s boyfriend in Illinois. Circumstances led to heavy traffic on U.S. 40 that night, prompting her to overtake the tanker. She admitted to passing the truck in a no-passing zone, speeding to avoid oncoming vehicles, and narrowly avoiding a collision.

The truck driver, who survived the crash, detailed how the tanker lost control trying to give space to the minivan. Despite emergency vehicles rushing to the scene later, the girl claimed she was unaware of her involvement in the incident until her return trip to Ohio. She admitted her lack of judgment in assessing distances and ensuring safe manoeuvres on the road.

Effingham County State’s Attorney is expected to review the findings of the Illinois State Police investigation to determine any legal implications. The tragic accident serves as a reminder of the consequences of reckless driving and the importance of road safety precautions.
