NHS Issues ‘Tripledemic’ Warning and Offers New Vaccines
The NHS is urging millions of individuals to avail of Covid and flu vaccines in preparation for the upcoming colder months, amidst concerns of a potential virus ‘tripledemic’. Over 11 million eligible recipients have been called upon to receive their free vaccinations, either through online booking or visiting walk-in centres. A high vaccination uptake is crucial this winter to help safeguard against illness.
The term ‘tripledemic’ encompasses the combined risks posed by Covid, flu, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Each virus requires a different vaccine, with varying eligibility criteria to consider. Steve Russell, the NHS national director for vaccinations and screening, emphasised the importance of vaccination, especially given the significant number of Covid and flu-related deaths recorded in recent years.
To address the ‘tripledemic’, the NHS is offering three different vaccines this autumn. It is advised that individuals do not receive all three jabs simultaneously. While Covid booster jabs and flu shots can be administered together, it is recommended to schedule the RSV vaccine separately.
The Covid booster jab is available to individuals falling within specific groups until 20 December this year. This includes those over 65, individuals aged 6 months to 64 years with underlying health conditions, residents of care homes for the elderly, and front-line health and social care workers. Appointments for eligible individuals can be booked via various channels, including the NHS app, pharmacies, or by calling 119.
For those at risk of severe flu-related complications, the flu vaccine is recommended. Eligible groups include individuals over 65, those with certain long-term health conditions, pregnant women, care home residents, carers, and individuals living with immunocompromised individuals. The vaccine can be obtained at pharmacies, through the NHS app, or by contacting a GP.
Pregnant individuals and those aged 75 to 79 are recommended to receive the RSV vaccine. Pregnant women are typically offered the vaccine around 28 weeks into their pregnancy, while individuals in the 75 to 79 age bracket will be contacted by their GP surgery to arrange the vaccine. More information on each of the vaccines and their eligibility criteria can be found on the NHS website.
In the face of the looming ‘tripledemic’, the NHS is working to ensure widespread vaccination to mitigate the risks posed by Covid, flu, and RSV. By taking proactive measures and availing of the vaccines on offer, individuals can play a vital role in safeguarding their health and well-being during the winter months.
