Cape Town has been named the best long-haul destination for British tourists seeking value for money, surpassing cities like Hoi An and Tokyo which have previously held the top spot. In the recent Post Office Travel Money’s annual long-haul holiday cost of living barometer, Cape Town emerged as the most cost-effective destination among 31 other resorts and cities worldwide.
The South African city’s low local prices and a weakened South African currency contributed to its 12% decrease in costs for British tourists compared to last autumn. The survey evaluated the average prices of 10 staple items including beverages, meals, and essentials like suncream and insect repellent. With a total cost of £55.59 for these items, Cape Town offers significant savings for travellers.
Cape Town’s affordability not only reclaimed the top spot after six years but also outperformed last year’s best value destination, Hoi An in Vietnam. Tokyo, another previous chart-topper, now ranks second with a 13.5% decrease in prices. Asian destinations dominated the list of best value places, with three out of the top five spots.
For British travellers planning a winter sun getaway, the current exchange rates offer savings in around half of the surveyed destinations compared to a year ago. While locations like Saint James, Barbados saw an 18.5% drop in costs, Sydney, Australia emerged as the most expensive destination this year, with an average spend of £165 on the 10 tourist items.
Laura Plunkett, head of travel money at Post Office, emphasised the importance of researching destination costs to save on overall trip expenses. By comparing prices for meals, drinks, and essentials, holidaymakers can make informed decisions to keep costs down. Cape Town topped the list for the top 10 best value long-haul holiday destinations for Brits:
1. Cape Town, South Africa – £55.59
2. Tokyo, Japan – £64.07
3. Hoi An, Vietnam – £64.80
4. Bali, Indonesia – £67.70
