Homebuilder to Reveal New Killearn Home Development on Former Hospital Site
Homebuilders Cala Homes (West) are eager to introduce their latest development, Ballagan Woods, in Killearn this weekend, located on the grounds of the former Killearn Hospital. The unveiling of this 89-home project will take place on Saturday and Sunday, showcasing a mix of three-bed, four-bed, and five-bedroom homes, alongside The Arlow – a two-bedroom terraced bungalow.
Ballagan Woods is situated on the former Killearn Hospital site, with roads in the development named after past staff members, including a neurosurgeon, a heart surgeon, a doctor, a pharmacist, a scanner operator, a nurse, and an orderly/domestic. This homage pays tribute to the individuals who served at the historic hospital.
Stirling Council approved the development plans at the beginning of 2022 to bring to life the 89 homes featuring a variety of housing types such as bungalows, terraced, semi-detached, and detached homes. The sizeable brownfield site, once utilised as a backdrop for the STV crime drama Taggart, had long been considered an eyesore until this new project revitalised the area.
Initially built during World War II as a facility for casualties and servicemen, the Killearn Hospital later transitioned to offer orthopaedic and neurosurgical treatments before closing its doors in the 1970s. Despite several unsuccessful development proposals in the past due to the costs of clearing the site, Cala Homes (West) has taken on the challenge and transformed the area into the vibrant new Ballagan Woods community.
Suzanne McElhiney, the sales and marketing director at Cala Homes (West), expressed her enthusiasm for the project, highlighting the introduction of bungalow homes to the West of Scotland after a significant hiatus. The addition of the Arlow house type is a unique feature of the development, complementing the diverse range of housing options available at Killearn.
This revitalisation of the former hospital site into a modern housing development not only adds to the local property market but also preserves the legacy of Killearn’s healthcare heritage. The unveiling of Ballagan Woods signals a new chapter for the area, offering prospective residents a blend of contemporary living spaces while paying homage to the site’s storied past.
