Ellen Degeneres reveals she’s been diagnosed with Osteoporosis, OCD, and ADHD: ‘I’m like a human sandcastle’

Ellen DeGeneres has disclosed that she has been diagnosed with Osteoporosis, OCD, and ADHD. In her latest Netflix comedy special, “For Your Approval,” the 66-year-old former talk show host shared updates on her health challenges, describing herself as feeling like a “human sandcastle” who could disintegrate at any moment.

DeGeneres revealed that she found out about her Osteoporosis after undergoing a bone density test. This bone disease, characterized by brittle bones, often results from a decrease in bone mineral density and mass or changes in bone strength and structure, as explained by the Mayo Clinic. Following a bout of excruciating pain, she sought medical advice, initially thinking she had torn a ligament, only to later discover she might have arthritis.

Moreover, the renowned comedian discussed her experience with therapy following allegations of a toxic workplace environment in 2020. Through therapy, she learned that she has obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), a mental disorder involving uncontrollable recurring thoughts and repetitive behaviors that can cause distress and anxiety. DeGeneres reflected on her upbringing in a religion that did not acknowledge diseases or disorders, leading to a lack of awareness about mental health issues.

Acknowledging her own struggles, DeGeneres shared that she now recognises behavioral patterns of OCD in her late father, suggesting a possible hereditary link. Additionally, she opened up about having attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which affects focus, impulse control, and activity levels. Despite there being no known cure for ADHD, management strategies like therapy and medication can help alleviate symptoms, as stated by the National Institute of Mental Health.

In her candid discussion, DeGeneres expressed her challenges with memory loss alongside her other diagnoses, commenting on her ability to obsess over things but struggle to maintain focus. She shared her belief that despite her conditions, she considers herself well-adjusted due to her unique perspective on handling challenges.

The Netflix special, available for streaming, confronts some of the negative media portrayals DeGeneres has faced, with headlines labelling her as the “Queen of Mean” and a “villain.” The show provides viewers with a glimpse into the personal struggles and resilience of a prominent figure in the entertainment industry.

This revelation adds another layer to DeGeneres’ public persona, shedding light on her personal battles with health issues and mental well-being. Through her openness, she aims to inspire conversations and foster understanding around complex conditions like OCD and ADHD, encouraging others to seek help and support in navigating their own challenges.
