Flooding has tragically claimed the lives of at least 32 people in Nepal’s capital, with another 12 individuals reported missing due to the devastating impact of continuous rainfall. According to authorities, the heavy rains began on Friday night and are forecasted to persist throughout the weekend, exacerbating the already dire situation. In addition to the fatalities, 17 people have been injured, and over 1,000 individuals have been rescued in various locations across Kathmandu, as confirmed by Nepal Police spokesman Bishwo Adhikari.
The widespread flooding prompted the deployment of all police personnel nationwide to assist in ongoing rescue operations. The government had issued flood advisories across the country in anticipation of the deluge, implementing measures such as a night-time ban on buses along highways and advising against unnecessary travel by car. Security forces have been placed on high alert to manage the crisis effectively.
Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak addressed the press, acknowledging reports of damage in multiple regions beyond the capital and highlighting the government’s primary focus on rescue and aid efforts for affected communities. Swollen rivers inundated parts of Kathmandu, leading to flooding in residential areas and necessitating the evacuation of residents to higher floors. A significant area in the southern region of the city remains submerged, with an army helicopter mobilised to rescue individuals stranded in their homes.
Instances of landslides and flooding have been reported in various other areas across the country, underscoring the widespread impact of the natural disaster. The adverse weather conditions are attributed to the monsoon season, which commenced in June and typically concludes by mid-September. During this period, power outages and telecommunication disruptions were experienced in many parts of Kathmandu, compounding the challenges faced by residents.
