**Israel on High Alert Following Claim of Killing Hezbollah Leader Hassan Nasrallah**
Israel has been placed on high alert after the Israeli military claimed to have killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in a strike in Beirut. This development has heightened concerns of a wider conflict in the Middle East.
The airstrike took place during a meeting of Hezbollah’s leadership at their headquarters in southern Beirut. Along with Hassan Nasrallah, Ali Karki, the commander of Hezbollah’s southern front, was reported to have been killed. The attack resulted in six deaths and 91 injuries, with six apartment buildings levelled, according to the Lebanese health ministry.
Hezbollah responded to the Israeli action by launching dozens of projectiles across northern and central Israel, as well as the Israel-occupied West Bank. In turn, Israel escalated its military activities, calling up additional reservists and conducting more strikes in southern Beirut and Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley.
Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani, an Israeli military spokesperson, emphasised that Hezbollah’s arsenal remains a significant threat despite the recent strikes. He expressed Israel’s readiness for any further escalation and reiterated the country’s commitment to targeting the group.
Hassan Nasrallah has led Hezbollah for over three decades, shaping the group into a formidable adversary against Israel. His strategic leadership has garnered support from Shia religious leaders in Iran and Palestinian militant groups like Hamas. Nasrallah, a respected figure in the Arab and Islamic world, has lived in hiding for years due to the threat of Israeli assassination.
In response to Israel’s claim of killing Nasrallah, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei urged support for Lebanon and Hezbollah, positioning them as forces of resistance against Israel’s actions. The situation remains tense, with Lebanon preventing an Iranian aircraft from entering its airspace after Israeli warnings.
