Jannik Sinner, the current World No 1 in tennis, is facing a renewed threat of a doping ban as the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has launched an appeal against a ruling of “no fault or negligence” for two positive tests he received in March.
Sinner, who recently clinched victory at the US Open, tested positive twice for an anabolic steroid in March. However, an independent tribunal on August 20 decided that he was not at fault and therefore imposed no punishment. The tribunal accepted Sinner’s explanation that the banned substance entered his body during a massage from his physiotherapist, who unknowingly used a spray containing the steroid while treating a cut on their finger.
Despite the tribunal’s decision, WADA has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, aiming to enforce a ban of up to two years on the 23-year-old Italian. The agency believes that the initial ruling of “no fault or negligence” was incorrect under the applicable rules. WADA is seeking a period of ineligibility between one and two years but is not looking to disqualify any results other than those already imposed by the first instance tribunal.
The International Tennis Integrity Agency released a statement acknowledging WADA’s decision to appeal the ruling. The ITIA respects WADA’s right to challenge the independent tribunal’s decision in light of the unique circumstances and lack of precedent in the case. The process followed the guidelines of the World Anti-Doping Code but WADA has final authority to appeal such decisions.
