University tuition fees in the UK could potentially reach £10,500 annually as part of new government proposals. According to reports, a Whitehall source has revealed that the current university tuition fee system is deemed ‘unsustainable’. Currently, tuition fees for home students in England have been capped at £9,250 since 2017.
The government is said to be developing plans that would result in a 13.5% increase in university tuition fees over the next five years. These fees are expected to rise in line with inflation. However, there are also reports that ministers plan to reintroduce maintenance loans of £3,500, which were previously abolished under the Conservative government.
A source from Whitehall informed The Times, “The current system is unsustainable and we need to raise tuition fees. But at the same time, we need to look at maintenance grants to help those who can least afford it.” Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson has expressed concerns that the value of the current £9,250-a-year tuition fee has been gradually diminishing due to the lack of increase for a significant period.
Phillipson criticised the existing system as being the “worst of all worlds” and stressed the need for immediate change. Earlier this year, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced a shift in priorities, opting to tackle NHS waiting lists over fulfilling his pledge to abolish tuition fees. Universities UK (UUK) recently highlighted that government grants and fees have not kept pace with rising costs, leading to budget deficits.
UUK suggested that if investments in teaching students had maintained pace with inflation, funding per student would ideally be in the range of £12,000-£13,000. A Department for Education spokesperson stated, “We believe that every young person, regardless of their background, should have the opportunity to attend university.”
The spokesperson further mentioned that the government is focused on establishing a sustainable higher education funding system that supports students and maintains the excellence of universities.
