Blogger ‘obsessed with toxins’ confesses to poisoning her husband

Daisy Zantjer, a 39-year-old blogger from Pleasantville, Iowa, renowned for her discourse on hazardous chemicals and other toxins, has pleaded guilty to poisoning her husband. Court documents obtained by Law&Crime revealed that Zantjer admitted to administering a harmful substance, tetrahydrozoline hydrochloride, to her husband Allan Zantjer on two separate occasions in July 2023. She was subsequently charged with two counts of administering harmful substances and two counts of domestic abuse causing bodily injury in August, according to records from Marion County court.

Authorities stated that Zantjer engaged in domestic assault by surreptitiously adding tetrahydrozoline to her husband’s drink, leading to his hospitalisation, although he ultimately survived the poisoning. Poison Control highlights that ingestion of tetrahydrozoline hydrochloride can induce symptoms such as drowsiness, low blood pressure, and an alarmingly slow heart rate.

Interestingly, Zantjer’s previous social media activity gained attention, as she had posted on LinkedIn regarding the perils of chemicals and toxins in everyday household items. The Pleasantville Police Chief, Joe Mrstik, noted a connection between the blogger’s online presence and the criminal case. In one blog post from October 30, 2018, she emphasised her commitment to safeguarding her family from harmful substances, while in another post from November 2018, she likened introducing toxins into the body to poisoning someone gradually.

Zantjer was apprehended on July 20 and saw her bond reduced from $12,000 to $6,000 subsequent to her guilty plea. A sentencing date has been scheduled for November 7.

Overall, the case of Daisy Zantjer’s poisoning of her husband sheds light on the devastating consequences of such actions and underscores the importance of chemical safety and responsible sharing of information regarding toxins in our environment.
