Here’s how Helene and other storms dumped a whopping 40 trillion gallons of rain on the South

**HELENE AND STORMS BRING RECORD AMOUNTS OF RAIN TO THE SOUTHEAST**

Meteorologists have calculated that over 40 trillion gallons of rain inundated the Southeast United States over the last week due to the impact of Hurricane Helene and an accompanying rainstorm that arrived beforehand. This unprecedented deluge has left experts astonished at the sheer volume of water that has been unleashed.

The enormity of this rainfall can be visualised by comparing it to filling the Dallas Cowboys’ stadium 51,000 times or Lake Tahoe just once. If concentrated solely on North Carolina, the water accumulation would reach a depth of 3.5 feet (over 1 meter) across the state. This quantity would be more than enough to fill over 60 million Olympic-size swimming pools.

Ed Clark, the head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Water Center in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, remarked, “That’s an astronomical amount of precipitation. I have not seen something in my 25 years of working at the weather service that is this geographically large of an extent and the sheer volume of water that fell from the sky.”

The catastrophic flooding resulting from this rainfall has claimed over 100 lives, according to official reports. This staggering amount of rain was meticulously calculated by private meteorologist Ryan Maue, with approximately 40 trillion gallons recorded in the eastern United States, including 20 trillion gallons over specific states like Georgia, Tennessee, the Carolinas, and Florida due to Hurricane Helene’s impact.

The magnitude of this rainfall event is highlighted by comparing it to the combined capacity of two significant Colorado River basin reservoirs, Lake Powell and Lake Mead. This record-breaking rain event was the result of a combination of two or three storm systems culminating in devastating consequences for the affected regions.

North Carolina, in particular, bore the brunt of this extreme weather event, with some areas receiving more than 2 feet of rainfall. The interaction between the storm systems and the mountainous terrain exacerbated the situation, intensifying the rainfall and increasing the chances of runoff and flooding.

Meteorologists point out that such intense rainstorms are becoming more frequent and severe due to climate change. The increased warming of the atmosphere leads to higher moisture content in the air, leading to heavier rainfall events. The debate amongst experts on the role of climate change in these extreme weather occurrences continues, with some highlighting clear indications of its influence on recent storms.
