North Korea has once again condemned the United States and its allies for escalating military tensions by engaging in war games in the Asia-Pacific region. The nation’s UN Ambassador, Kim Song, criticised the US for continuously discussing regime change in North Korea, calling out the perceived hypocrisy and misuse of the United Nations for selfish gains.
Speaking at the U.N. General Assembly’s high-level meeting, Kim accused the United States of trying to dominate world affairs unfairly and exacerbating military confrontations. He highlighted the historical context of nuclear weapons development, pointing fingers at the US for being the first to develop and use such weapons. Kim stressed that such actions should no longer be tolerated on the global stage.
North Korea’s response comes in the midst of US-South Korea joint military drills aimed at bolstering their defense capabilities against Pyongyang. The annual exercises have raised tensions on the Korean Peninsula, with North Korea viewing them as provocative and justifying its nuclear ambitions. In a rebuttal, South Korea defended its stance, emphasizing the need to maintain robust defense mechanisms to protect its people.
The U.N. General Assembly also witnessed criticisms from other diplomatically isolated nations, such as Afghanistan, Myanmar, and Syria, for the lack of inclusivity and fairness in global governance. Various speakers highlighted the challenges posed by major powers and called for a renewed focus on multilateralism to restore the U.N.’s credibility and relevance.
Despite the absence of key representatives from Afghanistan and Myanmar, other nations like Burkina Faso and Nicaragua voiced their determination to stand firm against interventionist agendas. Burkina Faso’s Foreign Minister called for a reevaluation of global power dynamics, emphasizing the need to prioritise inclusive governance without hegemonic influences. These sentiments were echoed by diplomats from different nations, advocating for a rules-based international order and denouncing unilateral actions that undermine global stability.
