An apparent Russian artillery strike has tragically claimed the lives of at least seven people at a market in the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson. The strike, which also left three others wounded, took place during a somber morning as Ukrainians observed a minute’s silence to honor their military and war dead.
The devastating incident occurred as shoppers were moving between stalls at the city center market, as reported by regional Governor Oleksandr Prokudin. Shocking video footage shared by Prokudin showed the bodies of individuals dressed in civilian clothing lying near a stall displaying tomatoes and other vegetables.
Authorities from Ukraine’s General Prosecutor’s Office have stated that the strike was most likely executed by Russian artillery and struck near a public transport stop. While Kherson has not been a major focal point in the ongoing conflict, the deadliest clashes have primarily unfolded in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region where Russia has been aggressively vying for territorial gains.
In response to the invasion, Ukrainian forces made a strategic incursion into Russia’s Kursk border region. However, the Ukrainian government is eagerly awaiting further commitments of military and financial support from Western allies to bolster their efforts.
The Kherson region was one of the areas illegally annexed by Moscow in September 2022, alongside Donetsk, Luhansk, and Zaporizhzhia, where Russian occupation is ongoing. Despite Russian President Vladimir Putin’s demands for Ukraine to completely withdraw from these regions, Ukraine has staunchly refused.
Following Kherson’s fall into Russian control after the full-scale invasion in February 2022, Ukrainian forces retook western parts of the Kherson region, including its capital, nine months later. The recent market attack took place on the same day that Ukraine commemorated Defenders’ Day, an annual public holiday honoring armed forces, veterans, and fallen heroes.
Across the nation, activities paused at 9 a.m. as citizens paid tribute to those defending their country and those who have made ultimate sacrifices. Established in 2014 in response to Russia’s annexation of Crimea and occupation of parts of Donetsk and Luhansk, the holiday serves as a solemn reminder of the toll the conflict has taken on Ukraine.
On this significant day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy used the occasion to appeal for continued support from Western partners, emphasizing the need to counter Russia’s relentless aggression. Zelenskyy praised the courage and dedication of Ukrainian troops, acknowledging their unwavering commitment to preserving the nation’s freedom.
As the conflict continues to unfold, Zelenskyy underscored the importance of unified strength amongst Ukraine and its allies against Putin’s campaign of terror. The Ukrainian president’s impassioned words served as a rallying cry for resilience and solidarity in the face of adversity.
