Australia’s Online Dating Industry Implements Code of Conduct to Enhance User Safety
Australia’s government has announced the implementation of a code of conduct in the online dating industry aimed at safeguarding Australian users. The decision comes after research revealed that three out of every four individuals have encountered some form of sexual violence on these platforms.
The code, scheduled to be enforced, has received the support of major players in the industry, including Bumble, Grindr, and Match Group Inc. – the company behind popular platforms like Tinder, Hinge, OKCupid and Plenty of Fish. These platforms, which represent 75% of the Australian online dating market, have been given until April 1 to incorporate the required changes.
Under the new code, platforms must enhance their systems to identify potential instances of online harm and take action such as terminating the accounts of offenders. Clear complaint and reporting procedures are to be established, with a new rating system set to indicate how well platforms adhere to the code.
This move follows a call for a code of conduct last year, following research by the Australian Institute of Criminology highlighting the prevalence of sexual violence on dating apps and websites between 2016 and 2021. Communications Minister Michelle Rowland stressed the necessity of a robust complaint-handling process and emphasized the importance of banning individuals across all platforms if necessary.
Bumble expressed its commitment to combatting gender-based violence and praised the opportunity to collaborate with the government and industry on what they described as a “world-first dating code of practice.” The company emphasised its focus on safety and creating healthy relationships.
While platforms like Bumble are on board with the new code, others such as Happn, Coffee Meets Bagel, and Feeld have not yet signed up. The government aims for the code to empower Australians in making informed decisions about choosing safe dating apps.
Moreover, the government has issued a stern warning to the online dating industry, indicating that legislation will be introduced if operators fail to prioritise user safety.
