Recent rainfall across Britain pales in comparison to the staggering average annual rainfall of 11,873 mm experienced in Mawsynram, making it 22 times wetter than London and far exceeding Glasgow’s precipitation levels. Locals describe their hometown as “risky” due to the extreme weather conditions they endure, with torrential rains leading to potential dangers such as flooding and landslides.
Jyotiprasad Oza, a resident of Mawsynram, shares the wonders of the town with tourists as a guide, attracting around 10,000 visitors annually, especially during the heavy rainfall months from June to September. The town’s extreme weather patterns often make it impossible for residents to venture outside, with children sometimes unable to attend school during heavy rainfalls. One extraordinary instance saw Mawsynram recording 1,003mm of rain in just one day, surpassing London’s annual rainfall.
The town’s unique geography, situated at an elevation of 1,400m, exacerbates its already intense climate, further intensified by warm, saturated air from the Bay of Bengal during monsoon season. To cope with the relentless rain, residents have ingeniously soundproofed their homes and rely on traditional full-body umbrellas known as Knups made from bamboo and banana leaves. Despite the challenges posed by the weather, Mawsynram also boasts stunning scenery, including the impressive Nohkalikai Waterfalls, the fourth-highest cascade globally.
