Detroit mom-of-three, 23, dies by suicide while at court waiting for arraignment. Now her mom wants answers

A Detroit mother-of-three, aged 23, tragically died by suicide while waiting for her arraignment in court, sparking a call for answers from her grieving family. Chelsea Heugel was in custody at the 36th District Court when the incident occurred, leading to her passing in a hospital. Her mother, Rebecca Fant, revealed to WXYZ that she had informed the court about her daughter’s mental health struggles, including diagnoses of bipolar disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, and high-level ADHD. Heugel was being held on charges related to a stolen vehicle and eluding the police.

Fant expressed shock and dismay at the lack of supervision provided to her daughter at the court, emphasizing that despite her warnings about Heugel’s mental health conditions, appropriate measures were not taken to ensure her safety. She shared that Heugel was facing challenges, including a domestic violence situation, which may have contributed to her state of mind leading up to the tragic event.

The heartbroken mother highlighted the devastating impact this loss has had on Heugel’s three young children, who now face growing up without their mother. Fant also mentioned the profound effect on her own family, with five children left struggling to comprehend the loss of their sibling. She stressed that more attentive monitoring could have potentially prevented this tragedy.

Responding to the concerns raised, Chief Judge McConico, who oversees the court, stated that they were not informed of Heugel’s mental health issues. The court’s security officers reportedly conducted regular checks on Heugel every 15 to 20 minutes, engaging in conversations with her and visually assessing her well-being. Tragically, Heugel was found deceased between two of these checks. Following the incident, additional safety measures, such as increased surveillance through additional cameras, were promptly implemented at the facility.

Acknowledging the profound impact of the loss, Judge McConico extended sincere condolences to Heugel’s family and loved ones during this difficult period. A GoFundMe page has been set up to support Heugel’s family, with donations pouring in to assist them during this challenging time. In the wake of this tragedy, mental health resources have been highlighted, urging those in need of support to reach out for help.

As the family seeks answers and processes the devastating loss of Chelsea Heugel, questions remain about the circumstances leading to her passing and the steps taken to prevent such tragedies in the future. The community mourns the untimely loss of a young life and reflects on the importance of mental health awareness and support in preventing similar incidents in the future.
