New York Jets wide receiver Allen Lazard anticipates facing a fine from the NFL due to his celebration following a catch in the game against Denver last Sunday, which involved a gesture resembling a gun. Lazard expressed his expectation of the fine, labeling the situation as “very silly.” Despite discussions with his coaches, he has not received any clarification from the NFL regarding the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty he received for the gesture.
During the Jets’ match against Denver, Lazard made a 12-yard catch from Aaron Rodgers in the third quarter. While seated on the field, he signalled a first down by gesturing in a manner resembling a gun. Lazard lamented being the target of the situation and acknowledged it as part of the entertainment aspect of the NFL.
The league has cautioned players against making “violent gestures.” Notably, Atlanta wide receiver Drake London was fined $14,069 for a gun-like celebration during a recent game, while Giants rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers faced fines totaling $28,128 for two gun-like celebrations after scoring. Lazard hinted at consulting the NFL Players Association or having the Jets’ coaches communicate with officials, referencing a weekly email that outlines missed calls and corrections.
In the event of a fine for his gesture, Lazard expects the NFL to waive it, citing the lack of prior warning. He analogised this to implementing new driving rules without informing individuals, deeming it unfair. Despite this, he remains prepared for a potential fine based on past incidents of a similar nature.
