Jonathan Majors’ film ‘Magazine Dreams’ has secured a theatrical release scheduled for early 2025. The movie, which stars Jonathan Majors, was initially dropped following his conviction for assaulting his ex-girlfriend. However, Briarcliff Entertainment has now acquired the distribution rights for the film, as confirmed by the company’s chief executive, Tom Ortenberg.
Ortenberg revealed that Briarcliff is planning a significant theatrical release for ‘Magazine Dreams’ in the first quarter of 2025. Deadline was the first to report on the acquisition of the film. Prior to Majors’ conviction, ‘Magazine Dreams’ had received critical acclaim at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2023. Searchlight Pictures had originally scheduled a release for later that year, with high hopes of securing Majors his first Oscar nomination.
The situation took a turn after an incident in March 2023 that led to Majors’ arrest. His former girlfriend, Grace Jabbari, accused him of assaulting her in a chauffeured car, alleging that he hit her head, twisted her arm, and fractured her finger. Despite Majors maintaining his innocence, he was found guilty of one misdemeanor assault charge and one harassment violation in December.
In the aftermath of this legal decision, Marvel Studios decided to drop Majors from his role as Kang the Conqueror. This character was supposed to be a significant element in Marvel’s future projects across films and TV series. Following these events, Searchlight, which is also owned by the Walt Disney Co. like Marvel, returned the distribution rights of ‘Magazine Dreams’ to the film’s producers in January 2024.
In April of the same year, Majors was sentenced to complete a year-long counselling programme but avoided jail time. During the sentencing, Judge Michael Gaffey noted the agreement from both sides that jail time was not warranted, considering Majors had no prior criminal record. In the film ‘Magazine Dreams’ directed by Elijah Bynum, Majors portrays a lonely, aspiring bodybuilder with a troubled past.
Briarcliff Entertainment, the distributor for ‘Magazine Dreams’, is also responsible for releasing the controversial film ‘The Apprentice’, a Donald Trump dramatization, in 2024. With the theatrical release of ‘Magazine Dreams’ planned for early 2025, fans and critics alike will be anticipating the impact of this emotionally charged drama on the big screen.
