The Colorado Congresswoman launched a fundraiser for Italian athlete Angela Carini after she withdrew from her bout against Algerian athlete Imane Khelif. Khelif was wrongly accused of being transgender during the summer games, sparking a media controversy.
However, it has now been revealed that Carini’s coach rejected Boebert’s fundraising efforts, resulting in the return of the donated money to contributors. Boebert had aimed to raise $196,000, equivalent to Italy’s gold medal prize money, to support Carini. The fundraiser highlighted Carini’s alleged missed opportunity at a gold medal and had gathered $67,000 by August 15. The funds were intended to go directly to Angela Carini, as stated in the fundraiser description.
Despite Boebert’s efforts, Carini declined to accept the money after her coach communicated her decision to discontinue this chapter of her life. As a result, the donations were refunded by GiveSendGo. Boebert expressed gratitude to those who had contributed, acknowledging their overwhelming generosity in trying to rectify what she perceived as an injustice.
The controversy surrounding Khelif intensified as conservative figures, including former US President Donald Trump, falsely identified her as a man. The International Boxing Association had disqualified both Khelif and Taiwanese boxer Li Yu-ting from the world championships, alleging eligibility test failures. Khelif, who is a cisgender woman, was born female, registered female, and has always lived as a female, with no transgender identity.
Carini publicly apologised to Khelif for prematurely ending their match, expressing regret over the situation. Meanwhile, Khelif faced a wave of hateful rhetoric and cyber-harassment, prompting her to file a legal complaint in France for aggravated cyber-harassment. Despite the challenges, Khelif went on to win a gold medal at the Paris Olympics.
