Tesco says consumers in ‘good shape’ as it reveals jump in premium shoppers

Tesco has reported a positive outlook for consumers, citing a surge in demand for premium products and food price reductions that have boosted its sales. The UK’s largest supermarket highlighted that shoppers are purchasing more items compared to last year, with total sales increasing by 4% to £31.5 billion over the 26 weeks leading up to August 24.

The rise in purchase volume, particularly in fresh food items, contributed to a 4.9% growth in food sales in the UK. Tesco also managed to lower prices on around 2,850 everyday grocery products by an average of 9%, benefiting from a decrease in inflation in recent months.

The company noted an increase in purchases through its Clubcard loyalty scheme, with over 23 million households enrolled across the UK. Additionally, there was a nearly 15% rise in sales volume for Tesco Finest premium range products, attracting more than 20 million customers, with items like sourdough bread proving especially popular.

Ken Murphy, the Chief Executive of Tesco, remarked that customers are in “reasonably good shape,” showing stability in sentiment and a willingness to spend more on indulgent treats, exemplified by the growth in Finest sales. Tesco Finest Dine In sales saw an 18% increase over the period, potentially reflecting a trend of home dining over eating out.

Looking towards the festive season, Murphy expressed optimism about consumer sentiment and anticipated a more extravagant Christmas celebration this year. Tesco posted an adjusted operating profit of £1.6 billion for the first half of the year, a 16% increase from the previous year, and expects to achieve an operating profit of £2.9 billion for 2024, up from the initial projection of at least £2.8 billion.

The supermarket disclosed that it saved approximately £260 million in costs during the first half of the year through operational efficiencies and reduced wastage. Tesco’s market share in the wider grocery sector stands at 27.8%, its highest level since the beginning of 2022, solidifying its position as the leading supermarket in the country.
