A new nature reserve shelter in Dumfries and Galloway has been dedicated to a well-respected member of the community, as reported by the Daily Record. The shelter, located at Kippford Nature Reserve, was officially unveiled on Sunday with approximately 150 people in attendance for the dedication ceremony. Named in honour of Derek Roan, the former chairman of Colvend and Southwick Community Council, the shelter pays tribute to his significant contributions to the community before his tragic passing in a farm accident at Barnbarroch in 2022. Derek’s widow, Kathleen, dedicated the shelter in his memory.
During the ceremony, community council vice chairman Simon Pain highlighted Derek’s immense impact on the community, describing him as a prominent figure involved in various aspects of community life. From his roles in the church to his leadership in the family farming business and community council, Derek touched the lives of many with his practical and cheerful support. The decision to dedicate the shelter to Derek was a fitting tribute to his enduring legacy and the positive influence he had on the community.
The idea for the shelter was first proposed over five years ago, and its unique design, one of only two in the world, was brought to life by Finn Barlow and Charlie Graham. The project received support from various organisations including the People’s Project, Robin Rigg Community Fund, the National Lottery Community Fund, and local community associations. Following the dedication ceremony, attendees gathered at Kippford Village Hall for refreshments, celebrating the completion of this meaningful project that honours Derek’s memory and his contributions to the community.
