Kirkcudbright Galleries is poised to receive a funding boost for its temporary exhibitions, potentially marking them as signature events under the council’s events strategy. If approved by councillors, this move would entail an additional £28,000 in support for the displays next year.
The council’s education, skills and community wellbeing committee is scheduled to review the events strategy in an upcoming meeting. Among the events being considered for signature status are the Stranraer Oyster Festival, Kirkcudbright exhibitions by the council’s arts and museums service, and the Gatehouse-based Raiders Gravel cycling event organized by RED:ON Group.
While the Oyster Festival and Kirkcudbright exhibitions significantly contribute to the regional economy, with each event boosting it by at least £1 million annually, the Raiders Gravel event was not recommended for signature status despite its growing popularity.
The potential inclusion of Kirkcudbright Galleries and the Oyster Festival as signature events would bring the total number of supported events to five for the next fiscal year, pending confirmation for other events such as the World Championship Ice Hockey at Dumfries Ice Bowl.
The funding allocation for signature events amounts to £188,000, with Kirkcudbright Galleries expected to receive £28,000. Additionally, there is £46,000 available for two signature events—Big Burns Supper in Dumfries and the Scottish Rally in Dalbeattie—pending their event reviews.
