A tragic incident has occurred in Ontario, Canada, where a child has passed away due to rabies after being bitten by a bat while sleeping. The child, whose identity has been kept confidential, was swiftly taken to a hospital following the encounter with the rabid animal last month. Officials have chosen not to disclose the child’s name, age, or gender to safeguard the family’s privacy. Despite efforts made at a hospital in Ontario, located north of Sudbury, the child succumbed to the virus, marking the city’s first confirmed rabies case since 1967.
Rabies, a viral disease with an alarmingly high mortality rate, can be transmitted to humans through various animals including bats, raccoons, coyotes, foxes, and skunks. The availability of a vaccine against the virus presents a 100% success rate if administered within 48 hours of exposure. Dr. Malcolm Lock of the Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit revealed the tragic news during a health board meeting on October 2.
