Rishi Sunak, the former prime minister, currently holds the position and has not actively participated in the ongoing leadership contest. Conservative MPs are scheduled to narrow down the field to two final candidates on 9 and 10 October. Recent polls show Kemi Badenoch leading the race, with Robert Jenrick gaining ground and closely following behind by just four points, a significant increase from six weeks ago.
At the party conference in Birmingham, tensions arose between Badenoch and Jenrick when Badenoch suggested that maternity pay in the UK is excessive. Though she later revised her statement, Jenrick seized the opportunity to underscore his support for maternity provisions, aligning himself with parents and working mums. Meanwhile, polling data positions James Cleverly and Tom Tugendhat as the third and fourth favourites respectively. Cleverly has garnered public support, but ultimately, only Conservative Party members will cast votes in the final round.
Kemi Badenoch, known for her confrontational style and previous role as a business secretary, aims to redefine what it means to be a Conservative through her campaign. James Cleverly, who served as home and foreign secretary, pledges to unite the party and restore public trust. Robert Jenrick, a former ally of Sunak, has positioned himself as being able to win back right-wing voters while appealing to a broader electorate. Tom Tugendhat, representing the One Nation Conservatives, has highlighted his leadership capabilities and experience in dealing with challenging situations.
With the leadership race intensifying, the outcome remains uncertain until the final decision is made in November. Until then, these four frontrunners will continue to vie for the opportunity to lead the Conservative Party into the future.
