IAEA team samples seawater near Fukushima plant to ensure safe release of wastewater

A team of international scientists is currently in Fukushima, Japan, conducting a mission to ensure the safe release of treated radioactive wastewater from the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. This annual monitoring and sampling mission by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) aims to guarantee the safety of discharging the treated radioactive water into the sea.

The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant suffered significant damage from the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, leading to meltdowns in three reactors and the accumulation of large amounts of radioactive water. In response to this environmental crisis, Japan began discharging the treated wastewater from the plant in August 2023. However, this move met with objections from China, which subsequently blocked imports of Japanese seafood, causing economic repercussions for Japanese seafood exporters.

The IAEA team’s tasks include collecting samples from the nuclear plant, coastal waters, and a fish market in the nearby city of Iwaki. Additionally, the team will visit a national laboratory near Tokyo and hold meetings with Japanese officials. Notably, a recent agreement between Japan and China paved the way for Beijing to participate in monitoring the wastewater discharges under the IAEA framework. Experts from China have been included in the current IAEA mission.

Japan asserts that the release of treated wastewater meets international safety standards and is subject to ongoing monitoring by the IAEA. In response to China’s seafood import ban, Japan has criticised the measure as unscientific and called for its immediate termination. The collaborative efforts between Japan, China, and the IAEA underscore the shared commitment to addressing environmental concerns and ensuring transparency in managing radioactive wastewater.

The IAEA’s presence in Fukushima serves as a vital component of global cooperation in nuclear safety and environmental protection. By conducting sampling missions and fostering international partnerships, the IAEA plays a crucial role in safeguarding public health and the environment from the potential risks associated with nuclear activities.
