John Swinney remains optimistic that the Scottish Government can achieve its target of reducing child poverty to 10% by 2030, despite concerns raised by charities. The First Minister emphasized the need for coordinated efforts from both the Scottish and UK governments to address deprivation among children in Scotland. Swinney highlighted the importance of having the “right policy focus across the board” to meet the goal set by the Child Poverty (Scotland) Act, which aims to decrease poverty rates among children.
Recent statistics released by the Scottish Government revealed that 24% of children in Scotland were living in poverty, significantly higher than the interim goal of 18% for this year. Charities like the Child Poverty Action Group have expressed doubts that the 2030 target will be achieved based on the current figures. However, Swinney stated during a visit to an arts charity in Kilmarnock that the government will make every effort to tackle child poverty and believes that progress can still be made towards the 10% target.
Swinney pointed to initiatives such as the Scottish child payment, which has helped prevent 100,000 children from falling into poverty, as evidence of the Scottish government’s commitment to addressing the issue. He also called on the UK Government to remove the two-child benefit cap, which he believes is a barrier to reducing child poverty in Scotland. Swinney emphasised the need for collaborative policy interventions between the two governments to make substantial progress in combating child poverty.
In response to criticisms from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation about the government’s failure to use its powers effectively, Scottish Liberal Democrat Willie Rennie questioned the SNP’s track record on poverty reduction. Rennie highlighted the challenges posed by rising child poverty rates and urged for impactful actions to be taken to make a difference in the lives of children living in poverty.
The UK Government reaffirmed its commitment to tackling child poverty and outlined plans to develop a comprehensive strategy to address the issue across the country.
