The San Diego Padres have issued a reminder to fans regarding their zero-tolerance policy for inappropriate behaviour ahead of Game 3 of the NL Division Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. This warning comes after tensions escalated during Game 2 at Dodger Stadium, both on the field and in the stands.
During Game 2, there was a 12-minute delay when unruly fans threw baseballs towards San Diego left fielder Jurickson Profar and littered the outfield with trash. Profar had caught Mookie Betts’ potential home run ball in the first inning, leading to a taunting interaction with the fans. Moreover, there were exchanges of expletives between Dodgers pitcher Jack Flaherty and Padres third baseman Manny Machado, particularly after Flaherty hit Fernando Tatis Jr. with a pitch and struck out Machado.
Game 3 is scheduled for Tuesday night, followed by Game 4 on Wednesday night at Petco Park. In response to these incidents, Padres team president Erik Greupner emphasised the importance of maintaining a respectful atmosphere at the stadium. Greupner credited the fans for creating a strong home-field advantage for the team while reiterating that any fan engaging in abusive behaviour or speech will face ejection.
In a statement addressed to season ticket holders and shared on social media, Greupner urged fans to support the Padres passionately but also with sportsmanship towards both the home team and opponents. The Padres have had an impressive season, setting a club record attendance of 3,314,593 fans at their downtown ballpark, with 56 sold-out games out of 80.
Greupner’s message underscored the significance of maintaining a positive and respectful environment at Petco Park as the team continues its quest for a World Series Championship. The Padres acknowledged the support of their dedicated fans and encouraged them to uphold the values of class and good sportsmanship while cheering on the team.
