Almost 10 million pounds of meat have been recalled by the US Department of Agriculture over concerns of potential Listeria contamination. The ready-to-eat poultry and meat products at the heart of the recall are from BrucePac, an establishment based in Durant, Oklahoma. Tests conducted showed that the products tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes.
The USDA stated that these items were manufactured between June 19 and October 8 and were distributed to various establishments and distributors across the country, subsequently making their way to restaurants and other institutions. The total weight of the products affected was estimated to be nearly 10 million pounds. Detailed information on product labels and the specific products involved will be shared as it becomes available.
The issue came to light during routine product testing by the USDA’s Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) on finished products containing ready-to-eat poultry from BrucePac, identifying Listeria monocytogenes in the products. Further investigation pointed to BrucePac RTE chicken as the source of the contamination. The recalled products can be identified by the establishment numbers “51205 or P-51205” located inside or under the USDA mark of inspection.
Fortunately, there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions from consuming the contaminated products thus far. Individuals who are worried about potential illness are urged to seek medical advice. Listeria infection stems from consuming food tainted with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria, which can result in severe consequences according to the Centers for Disease Control.
Estimates suggest that 1,600 people in the US contract Listeria annually, with 260 succumbing to the infection. Symptoms of listeriosis may include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, and gastrointestinal issues. Although the infection can be grave, particularly for pregnant women, newborns, and older adults, it is treatable with antibiotics when detected promptly.
The recall serves as a precautionary measure to safeguard public health from potential harm due to Listeria contamination. Vigilance and prompt action in response to such risks play a pivotal role in maintaining food safety standards and protecting consumers from foodborne illnesses. It is crucial for individuals to remain informed about food recalls and follow recommended guidelines to mitigate health risks associated with contaminated products.
