In recent polling, Trump is gaining ground in the ‘Blue Wall’ states as Harris sees a slowdown in momentum. The latest Quinnipiac poll reveals a dead heat in three crucial swing states for the 2024 election, with Harris lagging behind Trump in Michigan and Wisconsin by small margins. In Michigan, she trails 50% to 47%, and in Wisconsin, it’s 48% to 46%. However, she leads in Pennsylvania by 49% to 46%.
These three states are historically Democratic-leaning but were won by Trump in 2016. Harris is facing challenges regarding her handling of global crises, particularly the conflict in the Middle East. Her leadership in this area is perceived less favourably than Trump’s, especially in Michigan where she trails by 10 points on the issue.
On the bright side, Harris garners strong support on abortion-related issues, with voters trusting her over Trump by double-digit margins in all three states. Despite her current numbers, there is potential for Harris to increase her support, as indicated by Democrats leading in Wisconsin’s Senate race and being tied in Michigan.
With the election approaching, there is a need for Harris to distance herself further from Biden on issues where he struggled against Trump. Harris has already taken steps to differentiate herself on economic matters by proposing plans not part of Biden’s re-election platform. Despite trailing in fundraising and previous debates, Trump remains a frontrunner in the race.
In a separate poll commissioned by a Democratic strategical outfit, The Bulwark, it appears that Trump is winning only a fraction of Republican voters who supported his primary rival, Nikki Haley. While Trump secured 46% of these votes, Harris received 36% support from this group, indicating a potential split among Republican voters.
The polls paint a picture of a competitive race with shifting dynamics, indicating the need for both candidates to strategize effectively to secure victory.
