**Atlanta Cop Named Investigator of the Year Shot Dead Allegedly Breaking into Neighbour’s Home**
An Atlanta police officer, Aubree Horton, honoured as the Investigator of the Year, tragically met his untimely end just days after receiving the prestigious award. The officer was fatally shot while allegedly attempting to break into a neighbour’s home in Winston, Georgia. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office revealed that the homeowner, in fear for his life, fired a single shot at Horton as he tried to forcibly enter the property.
The incident unfolded in the early hours of Friday morning, shortly after the resident had left for work, leaving her husband inside. Upon being alerted by their Ring doorbell footage capturing Horton’s attempt to enter, the woman promptly notified the authorities. Armed and prepared, the husband confronted Horton at the front door, leading to a fatal confrontation that resulted in Horton’s death.
Footage released by the police depicted a frantic scene, with Horton shirtless and in distress, repeatedly trying to gain entry into the neighbour’s home while shouting for help. Despite efforts to communicate with Horton, the situation escalated, leading to the fatal outcome. Horton, who was not carrying identification at the time, was ultimately identified through his fingerprints.
Just ten days earlier, Horton had been recognised as the Investigator of the Year by the City of Atlanta Police Department at the 20th Annual Crime is Toast Awards ceremony. The tragic turn of events left the law enforcement community and local residents in shock and disbelief.
Douglas County Sheriff Tim Pounds, in a statement following the incident, emphasised that the homeowner acted in self-defence and protection of his home.
