The Chicago Bears have reaffirmed their commitment to building a new stadium on the city’s lakefront, with team president Kevin Warren expressing that the focus remains on this location for the nearly $5 billion development project. Warren spoke at a news conference held at the team’s hotel outside London ahead of their upcoming game against the Jacksonville Jaguars at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The proposed project includes an enclosed stadium next to their current home at Soldier Field, as part of a larger initiative to revamp the lakefront area. The Bears are seeking public funding to support this venture, despite also owning property in Arlington Heights. Warren emphasised that their preference lies with Chicago, citing the picturesque Museum Campus setting and the city’s iconic architecture as key factors influencing their decision.
With plans outlining a budget of $3.2 billion for the new stadium and an additional $1.5 billion for infrastructure, which could feature a publicly owned hotel, the Bears are optimistic about the project’s progress. Warren stated that they aim to commence construction by 2025, following ongoing discussions with key stakeholders from both the business and political spheres.
While Warren acknowledged the lengthy process involved in such a significant undertaking, he expressed confidence in the project’s ultimate success, drawing on his experience overseeing the development of U.S. Bank Stadium during his tenure with the Minnesota Vikings. The funding model proposed for the new stadium involves contributions from the Bears, an NFL loan, and bonds from the Illinois Sports Facilities Authority.
Looking ahead, the team is focused on securing political approvals for the project and ensuring that the stadium design is adaptable to various locations. Warren highlighted the need for a versatile blueprint that can accommodate different sites, underscoring the meticulous planning required for such a long-term investment. He expressed faith in the collective efforts of political leaders, business partners, and fans, envisioning the new stadium as a prestigious asset for the National Football League.
As discussions progress and plans take shape, the Chicago Bears are determined to forge ahead with their vision of a state-of-the-art stadium on the city’s lakefront, a project that holds the promise of enhancing both the sporting landscape and the urban environment.
