‘I lost thousands in savings to the dark web while on holiday – and hackers are still targeting me’

A teacher has shared a cautionary tale after losing thousands of pounds in savings to hackers while on holiday in Cornwall, and continues to face ongoing attempts to access his information.

Matthew Shaw, a 27-year-old science teacher, was enjoying a two-week vacation with his wife Davina, 27, when he received a notification on his phone revealing that £3,500 had been spent from his account on a hotel stay in Romania, leaving him with just £20 remaining.

Upon contacting his bank, First Direct, Shaw discovered that his identity had been sold on the dark web, leading to the fraudulent transaction. Despite the bank refunding the money a week later, Shaw has since been plagued by persistent hacking attempts, receiving numerous unauthorised sign-in notifications daily.

The incident cut their holiday short, forcing the couple to miss out on planned activities like jet skiing. Shaw highlighted the emotional toll of the ordeal, with Davina left in tears as they had to rush back home due to financial constraints.

Post-investigation, Shaw was enrolled in a 12-month fraud prevention programme by First Direct, involving rigorous verification processes for transactions and applications to safeguard against future fraud attempts.

Implementing additional security measures such as revised passwords, changed email providers, and enabling two-factor authentication, Shaw remains vigilant against continued hacking endeavours targeting his outdated email address.

Advising others to bolster their device security, Shaw hopes to raise awareness about the prevalence of cyber threats and the importance of safeguarding personal information. Despite the setback, Shaw’s resilience serves as a reminder of the persistent digital dangers faced by individuals in today’s interconnected world.
