A recent poll conducted by BBC Radio 2 has unveiled the public’s favourite British musical group, with iconic bands like The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Queen, and Girls Aloud vying for the top spot. The results of the poll were announced on Friday, with The Beatles emerging victorious as the “ultimate British group” among the top 30 acts.
The Beatles, formed in Liverpool in 1960 by Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr, have been recognised for their incredible influence and success in the music industry. Known for hits such as “Twist and Shout,” “Come Together,” “Hey Jude,” and “Yesterday,” The Beatles have achieved 18 UK No 1 singles and 16 UK No 1 albums, solidifying their status as one of the best-selling music acts of all time.
In addition to The Beatles, other legendary British bands featured in the top 20 of the BBC Radio 2 poll include the Spice Girls, Blur, The Kinks, Led Zeppelin, and The Who. Oasis, who recently announced their long-awaited reunion and upcoming stadium tours, claimed a spot in the top 10.
The poll was conducted in honour of National Album Day, which is set to take place on Saturday, October 19. This year’s theme, “Great British Groups,” celebrates the rich musical heritage of British bands across the decades. Panel chair Jeff Smith, Radio 2 and 6 Music’s head of music, expressed excitement over the public’s engagement with the poll and highlighted the significance of the top 30 chart in recognising British musical talent.
To mark the occasion, a special programme will be aired on Saturday, October 19, on BBC Sounds, featuring exclusive content celebrating British bands. Additionally, Tony Blackburn will showcase exclusively British bands on his Sounds of the Sixties programme, and Johnny Marr will present Great British Groups on Radio 2, sharing his favourite British acts every Sunday from October 13 to November 3.
The top 20 British groups, as voted by Radio 2 listeners, include a mix of iconic acts spanning generations, from The Beatles and Queen to Coldplay and Oasis. National Album Day promises to be a celebration of British music and the enduring contributions of these beloved groups to the global music scene.
