A woman has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of her parents and maintaining a facade about their whereabouts for four years. Virginia McCullough, 36, was found guilty of poisoning her father, John, with prescription medication and fatally stabbing her mother, Lois. The court heard that she confessed to committing the murders between 17 and 20 June 2019 at Chelmsford Crown Court.
McCullough concealed her father’s body in a “homemade mausoleum” in his bedroom, while her mother’s body was hidden in a wardrobe in her mother’s bedroom. She continued to reside at the residence during this time. McCullough’s actions were uncovered when her parents’ GPs raised concerns, leading the police to investigate the property in Pump Hill, Chelmsford, in September 2023.
During the sentencing hearing, it was revealed that McCullough had been thinking about killing her parents since March 2019. She had not been employed for many years and was involved in online gambling, spending a significant amount on gambling transactions. McCullough also ensured she continued to receive her parents’ pensions following their deaths.
Richard Butcher, the brother of Lois McCullough, described his niece as “very dangerous” and expressed how the incident had shaken his faith in humanity. McCullough’s sentencing saw her receive a minimum term of 36 years in prison. The case has left a lasting impact on all involved, highlighting the tragic consequences of her actions.
